To fulfill the goal set forth in our Mission Statement, “We also strive to serve the greater Portland community,” WiPP has hosted several community outreach endeavors to give back to the community that has so generously given to us. We also encourage our members to support community organizations on their own.

THIS WINTER
We'll be hosting a food or supplies drive to help nonprofits in the community. Stay tuned to see how you can help!

Previous outreach events

JUNE
WiPP had a great month with our second Summer Book Drive to benefit the Regence Boys & Girls Club, Books to Oregon Prisoners, and Portland Books to Prisoners. Thank you to our drop-off points: Annie Bloom’s, In Other Words, A Children’s Place, Twenty-Third Avenue Books, Looking Glass Bookstore, and Ink & Paper Group. We collected over 1500 books!

MAY
WiPP branched out this month and participated in National Bike Month with Women on Bikes, Bike-to-Work Week, and the grand opening of Springwater Corridor Three Bridges. We're proud to bike for our health, for the environment, and for these great community organizations.

APRIL
We kicked off this new year of community outreach with a project that directly involved women and literacy and supported one of the newest women-owned and -operated publishers in Portland, Bitch magazine.

Bitch “is a print magazine devoted to incisive commentary on our media-driven world” and “seeks to be a fresh, revitalizing voice for feminism.” It was also recovering from the expense of a major move and dealing with the bankruptcy of its distributor. WiPP members donated in-kind items and their time and skills as volunteer editors. We were happy to support these sisters in Portland publishing, especially during this time when help was needed most.

FEBRUARY/MARCH
Bone Marrow Donation Drive, February 19-March 19. WiPP members requested financial support from family, friends, and co-workers in order to register to donate bone marrow. While don’t have a final total yet, but we are planning to go to the National Marrow Donor Program office in May to donate!

JANUARY
Pajama Bedtime Story Party, co-sponsored by SMART. The party was a blast! About 30 kids joined in the fun and requested a repeat event. SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) provided about 1,000 flyers and 20 books for the event.

DECEMBER
Close-to-Home Outreach benefited a family within the Portland publishing community whose children may have otherwise gone without this holiday season due to an illness in the family. More WiPP members participated in this outreach event than any other and helped make a big difference for this family. Thank you for your generosity!

NOVEMBER
Hosted a Food Drive Challenge to benefit Oregon Food Bank during the holiday season. Donated 139 pounds of food!

Provided editorial and design services to Street Roots and its publication, including a round table discussion on ways to improve the newspaper, whose sales go toward assisting homeless people in the Portland area.
